Urias, Dodgers vacant Brewers 4-0, continues 2nd half rise

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Julio Urías continued the pattern of closing squads throughout his career after the All-Star break.

The NL West leader Los Angeles Dodgers hope to stay warm through the end of the season.

Freddie Freeman and Gavin Lux backed Urías’ five solid hits, and the Dodgers defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 on Monday night. Urias (13-6) is 10-0 with a 1.99 ERA in their last 11 games.

“Since he’s in the Cy Young race here, we need to get close to him,” Freeman said. “Every time he’s on the pitch, it’s a chance for us to win. And it’s a chance for him to make a goalless start, as he always does.”

Urías has a career ERA of 1.87 after All-Star hiatus, the lowest in major league history by anyone who has scored at least 180 innings since the Midsummer Classic.

He came back for the Dodgers on a day when they announced that two-time All-Star right-back Walker Buehler would have end-of-season elbow surgery. Buehler’s injury had prevented him from shooting for the past two months.

“We know how hard it is to lose Walker, in particular,” Urías said through an interpreter. “But we have a good rotation. We know what we can do.”

A day after their 12-game winning streak ended in a 4-0 loss to Kansas City, the league’s bests, the Dodgers, were back on track, climbing 20-4 since the All-Star hiatus.

Freeman shot alone On Freddy Peralta’s first hit (4-3) and Lux added two running bursts against Hoby Milner in sixth place.

Urias was out of trouble in the first three halves. Allowing four strokes and two walks, he finished with six strokes and was up 10-0 with a 1.99 ERA in his last 11 starts.

Brewers took the lead man on top in each of the first three innings against Urias. However, they went 9 to 0 while the runners were in the scoring position and were unsuccessful after Rowdy Tellez’s fourth-ranked single-release single.

“I feel like if we attack first, we’re going to break the momentum on him,” said Brewers short-back Willy Adames. “But we didn’t, and she was relieved.”

Milwaukee hit saver Chris Martin four times in the sixth inning.

Andrew McCutchen was out of breath to start the kick, but a third-hit pass hit the ball and took him to second place on a wild field. Martin then shot Kolten Wong, Hunter Renfroe, and Tellez.

Freeman’s homer finished 16th this season. It also doubled in seventh place.

Peralta allowed one run, but only four innings left. He avoided a base-loading jam in fourth place, eliminating Cody Bellinger with his 92nd and final hit.

The Dodgers added an unwinnable streak in the fifth round before making 4-0 as Lux went to the left in the sixth round. Growing up in Kenosha, about 40 miles south of Milwaukee, Lux said she has 30 to 35 friends and relatives at play.

“My dad, grandparents, and grandpa were right next to the bunker, so I pointed them (after homer) as I ran,” Lux said. It’s been a long time, so it was cool.”
