Swiss tennis player Jil Teichmann, 24, said he hopes Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will play regularly on the ATP Tour, believing their presence is beneficial for the game.
Federer, 40, had knee surgery last August and hasn’t played since. Wawrinka returned to the competition last March after being out of the field for 12 months due to foot surgery.
“Federer and Wawrinka are from another generation, so I know they won’t be here forever, but I hope they will play tournaments again, because they are so good for Swiss tennis and tennis international,” Teichmann said, according to Sportskeeda.
In the third round of Roland-Garros, Teichmann was behind by one set and a timeout, but recovered after beating old world number one Azarenka 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(5). “I knew I was going to fight,” Teichmann said after the win.
“One of the best things about Vika is that she’s a fighter just like me. I’ve had great matches, long matches on the ground. I knew I’d have a chance, I’ll have to stay calm and do it. It’s part of my job.”
The match lasted over three hours, and Teichmann thanked the people of Paris for comforting him. “The atmosphere was incredible today. I feel at home.
The people were there, supporting me, encouraging me. They gave me energy. It was very important to let me hold on during the long game,” added Teichmann.
King Roger is impatient
During the interview, Roger Federer also talked about how he plans to organize his tennis schedule when he takes action.
“[Que ma famille voyage à nouveau avec moi pour les tournois de tennis] It’s a problem I really want to solve. “Because that means everything is in order for the knee and the turn.”
“The advantage is that I won’t be playing 20 tournaments a year like I used to. My schedule will be manageable and that’s why I’ll say: sometimes they’ll be there, sometimes they won’t.” This means that Switzerland isn’t sure if it can bring its family to all the tournaments on its calendar.
“A week in Shanghai or Indian Wells is definitely a lot of effort,” Federer said. “But I also know my kids will be happy to see some places again, because we meet our friends here every year.” said.
