Phillies place Seranthony Dominguez to IL, Corey Knebel leaves for season

The Phillies said Seranthony Dominguez’s trip to the injured list would be short, initially appearing on NBC Sports Philadelphia.

The Phillies aren’t leaving anything to chance with Seranthony Dominguez. Even before looking at the MRI results, the team brought the hard-hitting close to the 15-day injury list on Sunday morning due to the strain on his right triceps.

“They sent him in for X-rays last night to check for bone chips and the like, and it was clean,” said manager Rob Thomson. “Now he’ll do an MRI today to see if there’s any structural damage.”

Dominguez admitted he was worried about his situation on Saturday night, but by Sunday morning there seemed to be hope that the problem was not serious.

“We hope he’ll be back when his time at IL is up,” Thomson said.

Dominguez’s assignment at IL has been postponed to Thursday. He could return to San Francisco on September 2 at the earliest. Coincidentally, it could also be the day Bryce Harper is removed from the wounded list. He’s been out since he broke his left thumb on June 25.

Bullpen has been a force for the Phillies since the team began feuding in June. The Phils lost two members of the unit within a week. Corey Knebel had to part with something called a lat stretch before the game in New York last Sunday. According to Thomson, Knebel also has a tear in his shoulder capsule. The shooter will attempt to treat the injury non-surgically for now, but his season is over as he is placed on the 60-day injured list. That placement opened up a spot in the 40-man roster for the Phillies to add Triple A right-winger Tyler Cyr. He replaced Dominguez on the active roster.

Dominguez, 27, operated on Tommy John in the summer of 2020 and has been on the field very little last season. He has come back strong this season with a three-figure fastball, 1.64 ERA and nine saves in 46 games. He took 11 hits out of nine and allowed only 26 hits out of 44.

Although Dominguez has been on the upswing this season, team officials remained concerned about his post-operative workload. Protecting Dominguez was one reason the club bought veteran David Robertson on the trade deadline. This move looks even smarter now.

“He’s coming out of surgery and I’ve been telling him all year that we have to be careful,” Thomson said of Dominguez. “This (trip to IL) is just a precaution, really, get the ball out of your hands and let it rest.

“In the back of my mind I always thought there would be a time when we gave him some time because he basically hadn’t been on the field in two years.”

In Dominguez’s absence, the Phillies will lean on Robertson and leave Jose Alvarado and Brad Hand at the end of the games. All of them have closing experience. Matches will be involved in Thomson’s decision-making process. Connor Brogdon will also be important.

Thomson wasn’t sure if Robertson would be available for the series finale against the Mets on Sunday afternoon. The right-handed player took 36 shots in two hits to secure Saturday night’s win.
