Kershaw and Dodgers beat Rockies 6-1 for 111th win

LOS ANGELES – Two sets stand out for the Los Angeles Dodgers in a season of gaudy numbers.

They earned their 111th victory to become the National League’s most winning team in over a century, with Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner each reaching 100 RBIs.

“This team is in elite company for the regular season,” said coach Dave Roberts after beating the Colorado Rockies 6-1 on Wednesday. But we know that the most important part of the season is yet to come.”

At 111-51, the Dodgers finished the regular season 60 games over .500.

“Winning 100 games is insane. The fact that we won 111 is wild. That’s really hard to do,” Turner said. “We just kept hanging around a bit.”

Clayton Kershaw is set for postseason with nine hits. Turner hit a triple-hit homer in the fifth innings for the NL West champion, the NL’s most winning team since the 1906 Chicago Cubs’ score of 116-36.

“This is mind-blowing,” said Freeman, who joined the Dodgers in March from Atlanta. “You should be fine from start to finish.”

Kershaw hit 2,807 career hits. He allowed a run and a hit in five innings, and the Dodgers took a walk when a three-game skating was over.

“We were all rooting for Freddie to reach the same 100 RBI mark as Trea,” Kershaw said.

The Dodgers clinched the #1 seed overall at the end of the season and will have the home advantage throughout. They open the Division Series on October 11 against the New York Mets or San Diego.

“The first tournament is over. Now the big one begins,” Freeman said. “Nobody cares what your numbers are, how many wins you have. From Tuesday, it’s 1 to 11.”

It’s the fourth time the Rockies have two wins this season, their most losses since 2015, 68-94. They were even worse than 74-87 in 2021.

There was drama in an otherwise meaningless game.

Freeman managed to beat Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets for the NL batting title. Freeman, who had to go 4v4 to catch McNeil, doubled down on his first two horse-bats and hit his goal, but a flight to the warning track in midfield ended his hopes for fifth.

Freeman hit the season at .325, finishing at .326 after McNeil failed to start the Mets’ rain-delayed final against Washington.

“I was close,” Freeman said. “I got it working.”

Freeman finished with 199 hits. He and Turner became the first Dodgers teammates to reach 100 RBIs since Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp in 2009.

“The counting statistics are a bit overlooked now because everybody’s about efficiency, but you have to play every day to get some of those counting numbers,” Turner said. “You have to be healthy, all year round, up, down, night game to day game, whatever you have to crush it. Those kinds of stats are still important to me and I know Freddie loves them too.”

Freeman’s 393-metre drive to the left tied the game at 1 and made two outs in the third. He was single in the seventh run.

Turner’s triple hit from right to center chased Chad Smith (0-1) and gave the Dodgers a 4-1 lead. It’s a 5v0 shift for Turner, who has added a seventh-rank single to boost his batting average, which has fallen in recent weeks.

Cody Bellinger added a solo shot against Noah Davis in his seventh major league debut.

Colorado’s Ezequiel Tovar made his second major league debut with two exits.

Dodgers: OF Chris Taylor (neck) worked in the batting cage. “I expect him to be on the postseason roster,” Roberts said. … RHP Blake Treinen (right shoulder strain) and RHP Dustin May (lower back strain) had simulated games. Treinen faced three hitters and will do it again in a few days. May had two bumpy hits, and Roberts described it as “very encouraging.”

The Dodgers have drawn 3,861,092 fans at home this season, the second-highest in team history. In the last season before the COVID-19 restrictions were applied, it was better than 3,974,309 in 2019 alone.

Rockies: Open spring practice against Arizona on February 25.

Dodgers: Five days off at home against the New York Mets or San Diego Padres on Tuesday before the Division Series.

Kershaw took his 111th win on, beating the Dodgers, Rockies 6-1.
