F1 LIVE: Lewis Hamilton crashes on lap one, Max Verstappen wins Belgian Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo reacts to McLaren’s ‘bittersweet’ exit

Max Verstappen took a stunning 14th position on the grid to win the Belgian Grand Prix and expand his lead in the championship standings.

Verstappen’s engine penalty and starting from the back of the court were supposed to open the race to the end, but the Dutch dominated passing both Ferraris (pol-resident Carlos Sainz and championship challenger Charles Leclerc).

Sergio Perez made one or two Red Bulls and Sainz finished off George Russell to finish the podium.

Previously, Fernando Alonso has described Lewis Hamilton as an “idiot” who “only knows how to drive and start first” after colliding on the first lap forcing the Mercedes driver out of the race.

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Christian Horner…

“One of our greatest team performances ever. I never thought Max would win that race and come forward so quickly. Today couldn’t have been better for us.

“It was one of those weekends when we were in the right window with our car. An incredible performance and right there with the best we’ve had back in 2010.

“Others are talking about the technical directive, but it has had no effect on our cars. Zandvoort is more like Hungary.

“You can never allow yourself to think too far ahead. It’s all about Zandvoort and then Monza…”

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Podium!

As Max Verstappen celebrates his ninth victory out of 14 races this season, the Dutch national anthem is playing on the podium once again!

His lead at the top of the World Championship is currently 93 points. Uncaught now doubt.

Sergio Perez is with him on the podium, Carlos Sainz is third.

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: BREAKING – Charles Leclerc suspended FIVE SECONDS time penalty

From bad to worse for the Ferrari driver. He gets a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane and drops from fifth to sixth!

And the gap with Alonso was so narrow that they pitted for the fastest lap they couldn’t get! We can call it another nightmare for Ferrari…

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen…

“It was an intense first lap to stay out of trouble. Once we got settled after the safety car, it was just picking the right place to pass the people, looking at the tires. This whole weekend has been incredible.

“It’s been a weekend that I couldn’t have imagined before. I’ll enjoy it and see what we can do next week!”

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Sergio Perez…

“Max was flying on another planet. He was untouchable. A very strong result for the team, we got a lot of points today, which is important.

“There was some chaos on lap one, I got off to a really bad start. But I brought it all back into Turn five.”

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Carlos Sainz…

“It was harder than expected. The speed wasn’t there, there was a lot of overheating in the tires. Our package wasn’t quite there this weekend. We finish on the podium, we get it.

“Max and Checo were on their own today, we couldn’t have put up a stronger fight.”

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Verstappen, Perez, Sainz

Charles Leclerc will NOT take the fastest lap – that’s the most 26 points to Max Verstappen as of this weekend, and that’s with a motor penalty!

Alex Albon holds P10 for one point for Williams!

1-10: Verstappen, Perez, Sainz, Russell, Leclerc, Alonso, Ocon, Vettel, Gasly, Albon

A third consecutive win for the championship winner – a terrific win for the Red Bull driver from P14! Ninth win of the season for Verstappen!

Perez was second and Carlos Sainz was third. Russell 4.

Leclerc beat Alonso on the final lap and must now set the fastest lap of the race for an extra point…

F1 Belgian Grand Prix: Lap 43/44 – Verstappen, Perez, Sainz

You can’t make it up at Ferrari – Scuderia pit with Leclerc going for the fastest lap… but they lose fifth place to Fernando Alonso, who took Leclerc into Turn 5!

Can Monegasque retake the position – and set the fastest lap?
