European team vice-captain Nicolas Colsaerts: “Ryder gives me goosebumps”

What does this assignment mean to you as assistant captain?
For me, confirmation that I am a part of opinion leaders is somewhere. It’s also a reward for being well behaved all these years, having an impeccable reputation and above all knowing what I’m talking about. This Ryder Cup has always meant a lot to me and my career. I have always identified myself very strongly with this rivalry. It’s a great honor to be on the core staff of any team.

“I got goosebumps all over my body the moment I heard the word Ryder Cup. Goosebumps.”

You have a special relationship with this competition.
Every time I hear those two Ryder Cup words, I get goosebumps all over my body. I have goosebumps. Going back ten years, the opening ceremony, my first game, the locker room… The feeling of belonging to something incredible is very, very strong. After experiencing this obviously historic 2012 edition, I inevitably have instant memories.

What is the role of the assistant captain?
It is difficult to describe the role of the assistant captain because somewhere we do not have to make any decisions, the captain decides everything. But we get involved in selection discussions, player discussions. There is a lot of analysis about this selection for the Hero Cup, which will take place in the second week of January. This includes trying players, forming pairs, what the guys can do, how they will react in the locker room, etc. An event that will be an opportunity to see. However, the role of the assistant captain is quite complex. I may be asked to take a coffee for 12 tees. I’m not sure about the scope of my responsibilities. But in any case, one thing is certain, and if I’m asked to do something, I will do it.

As a Belgian, would you definitely keep an eye on Thomas Detry’s performance?
Yes, the captain is definitely one of the players that Thomas Bjorn, Edouardo Molinari and I will keep an eye on. But the list is still much longer than you can imagine. It’s true that Detry is very lucky to be a part of this team if he continues to play the way he has played for several months. But I was quite impressed with how far Luke Donald looked deep in the standings. He asks us a lot of questions about a lot of guys he doesn’t know very well. Donald has played and lived in the United States for years, so there are many Europeans he doesn’t know. There is also this generation problem with players much younger than him. I have been asked to give my opinion on many men younger than me who are not of his generation. But seeing Luke Donald’s involvement at this level has already impressed me, and I think it’s unlikely to stop. »
